This Southern Honey Bourbon Glazed Ham is the perfect centerpiece for your Easter dinner, or any holiday table. This succulent ham is slow-roasted to perfection, then glazed with a rich, sticky blend of sweet honey, smooth bourbon, molasses, and warm spices. As it bakes, the glaze caramelizes, creating a glossy, flavorful crust that complements the salty, smoky meat. Each slice is juicy, tender, and bursting with bold, sweet-and-savory Southern-inspired flavor. Whether you’re hosting a festive dinner or just craving comfort food, this ham brings a delicious touch of indulgence to any meal.

๐Ÿ›’ Selecting the Perfect Ham

1. Bone-In vs. Boneless

  • Bone-in hams have more flavor and make for a better presentation (plus you can use the bone for soups later).
  • Boneless hams are easier to carve and more convenient, but can be slightly less flavorful.

2. Whole, Half, or Spiral-Cut

  • Whole ham: great for feeding a crowd, gives you control over slicing.
  • Half ham: comes as the shank (easier carving, leaner) or butt end (more tender and flavorful, trickier to carve).
  • Spiral-cut: pre-sliced for convenience, but can dry out if overcookedโ€”watch your temps!

3. Cured vs. Uncured

  • Most grocery store hams are curedโ€”either wet or dry cured. These are already cooked and just need reheating.
  • Uncured (or fresh) hams are raw pork legsโ€”these need full cooking like a roast.

4. Smoked or Unsure?

  • Smoked hams have a richer flavor. Look for “fully cooked, smoked ham” if you want the easiest prep.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Cooking the Perfect Ham

1. Donโ€™t Overcook It!

  • Most store-bought hams are already fully cookedโ€”youโ€™re just reheating to about 135ยฐF (57ยฐC).
  • For uncooked ham, cook to 145ยฐF (63ยฐC) and rest for 3 minutes.

2. Low and Slow

  • Heat your oven to 275โ€“300ยฐF (135โ€“150ยฐC). Plan on 15 minutes per pound for bone-in.
  • Use a meat thermometer to be preciseโ€”ham dries out quickly if overdone.

3. Glaze It Right

  • Apply glaze in the last 30 minutes to prevent burning.

4. Rest Before Slicing

  • Let the ham rest for 15โ€“20 minutes after cooking. This keeps the juices in.

5. Carving Tips

  • For bone-in, carve slices perpendicular to the bone for even, juicy pieces.
  • Spiral hams are easierโ€”just follow the pre-cut lines.

Wine and Beverage Pairing Suggestions

Nice moveโ€”wine + ham can be a chefโ€™s kiss combo if you pair it right! Since ham is usually salty, a little sweet, and sometimes smoky or glazed, you want a wine that balances those flavors without overpowering the meat.

Hereโ€™s a quick guide to the best wine pairings for ham, depending on how itโ€™s prepared:

๐Ÿ– Classic Baked or Glazed Ham

Usually a bit sweet (honey, brown sugar, or pineapple glazes)

Best Picks:

  • Riesling (off-dry) โ€“ Perfect with sweet glazes. Its acidity cuts through the richness, and a touch of sweetness complements the ham.
  • Gewรผrztraminer โ€“ Floral, spicy, and a little sweetโ€”awesome with glazed ham.
  • Beaujolais โ€“ Light red, fruity, and low in tannins. Refreshes the palate.
  • Zinfandel โ€“ Bold enough to match smoky or spicy glazes, and fruity enough to handle sweetness.

๐Ÿ Pineapple- or Brown Sugar-Glazed Ham

Sweet and tangy = need good acidity and fruit in your wine.

Try:

  • Rosรฉ (dry or off-dry) โ€“ Crisp and fruity, balances sugar and salt.
  • Sparkling wine (Brut or Extra Dry Champagne/Prosecco) โ€“ Bubbles + salt + sweet = chefโ€™s kiss.
  • Chenin Blanc โ€“ Especially from Vouvray (France); off-dry with bright acidity.

๐Ÿ– Smoked or Country Ham

Salty and intenseโ€”needs something bright and bold.

Go For:

  • Pinot Noir โ€“ Earthy and light enough not to overpower, with good acidity.
  • Syrah/Shiraz โ€“ Especially with smoky or peppered ham.
  • Dry Rosรฉ โ€“ A solid, versatile choice that works with smoky flavors.

๐Ÿ– Uncured or Fresh Ham (Roasted)

More like roast porkโ€”herby and savory.

Best With:

  • Chardonnay (unoaked or lightly oaked) โ€“ Smooth and slightly buttery.
  • Pinot Grigio โ€“ Light and zippy.
  • Cรดtes du Rhรดne โ€“ Juicy red with herbal notes that pair beautifully with pork.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325ยฐF (or whatever temperature the package directions for your ham recommend). ๐Ÿ”ฅ

  2. Carefully remove the spiral ham from its packaging, retaining any juices. Place the ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan, flat side down. If there were any juices reserved from the packaging, pour them into the bottom of the roasting pan along with the 1 cup of water.

  3. In a medium-sized bowl, combine all the remaining ingredients to make the glaze. Brush the surface of the ham generously with the glaze.

  4. Cover the ham loosely with aluminum foil, creating a tent-like shape. This will help prevent the ham from drying out during the cooking process.

  5. Place the roasting pan with the covered ham in the preheated oven.
Cook for approximately 10-15 minutes per pound of ham, or as directed on the hamโ€™s packaging. Approximate total cooking time will be 1.5 to 2 hours. Continue to brush the surface of the ham with the glaze mixture periodically throughout the baking time. To monitor the internal temperature of the ham, use a meat thermometer. The ham should reach an internal temperature of 135ยฐF (57ยฐC) for serving. (Be careful not to heat beyond 140ยฐF internal temperature as spiral-sliced hams tend to dry out easily if overcooked)

  6. Once the desired internal temperature is reached, remove the ham from the oven. Remove the aluminum foil tent and brush another layer of glaze over the ham, if desired. Re-tent loosely and allow the ham to rest for about 20 minutes before carving. This will help retain juiciness and make carving easier.

  7. Carve the spiral ham by slicing between the pre-cut lines, following the natural pattern of the spiral. Serve the tender slices of ham on a platter and enjoy your fully cooked spiral ham.
