Best Damn Hot Dog Sauce

A sauce is a liquid or semi-liquid substance served with food to enhance its flavor, moisture, or texture. It can be savory or sweet, and it often serves as a complement to the dish it accompanies. Sauces are typically made from a combination of ingredients like stocks, broths, dairy, vegetables, herbs, spices, and oils. They can vary in consistency from thin and runny to thick and creamy, and are often used to add depth and complexity to a meal.

For example, a tomato-based marinara sauce is typically made with tomatoes, garlic, onions, olive oil, and herbs such as basil and oregano, creating a rich, slightly tangy, and herby sauce that's perfect for pasta or pizza. On the other hand, a béchamel sauce, which is a classic French white sauce, is made by thickening milk with butter and flour, resulting in a smooth and creamy texture that's often used in lasagna or as a base for cheese sauces.

Hot dog meat sauce is a savory, flavorful topping typically served with hot dogs, but it can also be used for other dishes like fries or burgers. The sauce is made from ground meat, usually beef or a combination of beef and pork, cooked with a mixture of spices, tomatoes, and other seasonings. The meat is often simmered in a rich, slightly tangy sauce, creating a thick, hearty texture that complements the crispness of a hot dog.

Common ingredients in a hot dog meat sauce include:

    • Ground beef or pork: The base of the sauce, providing a rich, savory flavor.
    • Tomato paste or crushed tomatoes: These add a rich, slightly tangy flavor and help create the sauce's consistency.
    • Onions and garlic: For aromatic depth and a savory base flavor.
    • Spices: Common seasonings include chili powder, paprika, cumin, mustard, and cayenne pepper, which add heat and complexity to the sauce.

The sauce is simmered slowly to allow the flavors to meld together, resulting in a deliciously rich topping for hot dogs. It can be served over the dog in a generous portion, sometimes garnished with shredded cheese, onions, or hot sauce, but mustard and raw diced onions are the only acceptable garnish in my opinion.. The meat sauce provides a meaty, spicyy contrast to the mild, salty flavor of the hot dog, creating a comforting and satisfying combination.

    • 5 Tablespoons of chili powder
    • 6 Tablespoons of crushed red pepper flakes
    • 1 28-ounce can of tomato sauce
    • 1 15-ounce bottle of tomato ketchup
    • 1 6-ounce can of tomato paste
    • 1 Tablespoon of olive or canola oil
    • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
    • 3 Tablespoons of hot sauce (Recommended: Frank's Red Hot)
    Instructions
    1. In a large stockpot, sautè the onion in the olive oil until tender and translucent, but not browned.

    2. Crumble the ground beef and ground pork into the pot and immediately add just enough water to cover the cover the crumbled meat mixture. (Do not brown). Bring meat mixture to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for one hour, uncovered, adding more water only if necessary. Working with a wooden spoon, continue working on breaking up any clumps of meat as it simmers to achieve a uniform consistency.

    3. Add the remaining ingredients and cook, over low heat, uncovered, just simmering for 2 more hours or until desired consistency is obtained.

    4. For a thinner sauce, add more water halfway through the final 2 hours. For a thicker sauce, continue simmering beyond the final 2 hours.

    5. Allow sauce to cool, portion into zip-lock or vaccuum bags, and freeze until ready for use.
